Finalmente a Torino! Appena rientrato dal Giappone, Jurgen, che vive in Belgio dove conduce una piccola scuola di Calligrafia e un meraviglioso Bar/Cafè/Bed&Breakfast Calligrafico "Il Morris", ci insegnerà i segreti dell'Italica in una sua visione personalissima versione solo a matita di questo stile. C'è da approfittarne!

La scrittura Italica o Cancelleresca è un importante conoscenza di base per ogni calligrafo. Non c'è mai un giorno in cui Jurgen non scriva qualche riga in corsivo Italico, questo perché la forma delle lettere è così semplice, elegante e versatile. La usa spesso nel suo taccuino di appunti e, poiché la carta non riceve l'inchiostro molto bene, un giorno ha pensato di disegnarle a matita.

E ciò lo ha portato a esplorare lettere e composizioni sempre più complesse e elaborate piuttosto che restare sulle semplici forme delle lettere. Si è rivelato molto allettante esplorare ritmi e strutture diverse, arrivando a praticare una sorta di scrittura “gestuale”. Anche se ciò è diverso dalla solita scrittura gestuale con inchiostro e pennino poichè si ha un maggiore controllo sul peso da dare a certe linee e parti di esse. Ecco, questo è ciò che Jurgen vorrà proporci per acquisire un differente e inedito punto di vista sulla calligrafia, forse più meditata.

Jurgen Vercaemst è un calligrafo fiammingo nato nel 1967 in una piccola cittadina del Belgio, Kuurne.
La scrittura a mano è sempre stata una questione molto importante nella sua famiglia, nel senso che suo padre ha sempre incoraggiato la scrittura elegante.
Jurgen era affascinato dai manoscritti scritti a mano e iniziò a collezionarli quando era adolescente.
All'età di 25 anni frequenta il suo primo seminario con Frank Missant (allievo di Claude Mediavilla), che accende il suo interesse per la calligrafia.
Quel primo workshop con Frank Missant, insieme ad un documentario visto alla televisione locale sull’arte di Brody Neuenschwander, fu l’inizio di una vita piena di calligrafia.
Yves Leterme è stato il suo insegnante per tutta la vita e frequenta ogni workshop possibile con Yves. Jurgen ha incrociato il suo cammino con Peter Thornton che ha suscitato il suo interesse per le forme pure delle lettere, il disegno delle lettere e la composizione/impaginazione.
Altri insegnanti furono Joke, Liesbeth, Pieter & Kristoffel Boudens, Brody Neuenschwander, John Stevens, Elmo Van Slingerland, Carl Rohrs, Torsten Kolle, Ewan Clayton, Christopher Haanes, che ampliarono la sua conoscenza e tecnica. Ha tenuto workshop insieme a Yves Leterme, Peter Thornton (ASOH calligraphy conference 2016) e Elmo Van Slingerland (Cheerio 2019).
Attualmente organizza laboratori nella sua casa a Ruddervoorde vicino a Bruges, insieme ad altri calligrafi, e insegna sia in patria che all'estero.
La matita è stato il suo strumento preferito e porta sempre con sé i suoi taccuini Moleskine.

Finally in Turin! Just returned from Japan, Jurgen, who lives in Belgium where he runs a small calligraphy school and a wonderful Calligraphic Bar/Café/Bed&Breakfast "Il Morris", will teach us the secrets of Italica in his very personal vision, pencil version only of this style. You have to take advantage of it!

The Italic or Cancelleresca script is an important basic knowledge for every calligrapher. There is never a day when Jurgen doesn't write a few lines in Italic cursive, this is because the shape of the letters is so simple, elegant and versatile. He often uses it in his notebook and, since the paper doesn't accept ink very well, one day he thought of drawing them in pencil.
And this led him to explore increasingly complex and elaborate letters and compositions rather than sticking to simple letterforms. It turned out to be very tempting to explore different rhythms and structures, going so far as to practice a sort of "gestural" writing. Although this is different from the usual gestural writing with ink and nib as you have greater control over the weight to give to certain lines and parts of them. Here, this is what Jurgen will want to propose to us to acquire a different and new point of view on calligraphy, perhaps more thoughtful.

The course is open to everyone and does not require specific skills of any kind.

Jurgen Vercaemst is a Flemish calligrapher born in 1967 in a little town in Belgium, Kuurne.
Handwriting has always been a very important matter in his family in the sense that his father always encouraged elegant handwriting.
Jurgen was fascinated by handwritten manuscripts and began collecting handwritten pieces when he was a teenager.
At the age of 25, he attended his first workshop with Frank Missant (student of Claude Mediavilla), who ignited his interest in calligraphy.
That first workshop with Frank Missant, along with a documentary he saw on the local television on Brody Neuenschwander’s art, was the start of a life full of calligraphy.
Yves Leterme has been his life long teacher and he attends every possible workshop with Yves. Jurgen crossed paths with Peter Thornton who raised his interest in pure letterforms, the drawing of letters, and composition/layout.
Further teachers were Joke, Liesbeth, Pieter & Kristoffel Boudens, Brody Neuenschwander, John Stevens, Elmo Van Slingerland, Carl Rohrs, Torsten Kolle, Ewan Clayton, Christopher Haanes, who expanded his knowledge and technique. He taught workshops together with Yves Leterme, Peter Thornton (ASOH calligraphy conference 2016), and Elmo Van Slingerland (Cheerio 2019).
Presently, he organizes workshops at his place in Ruddervoorde near Bruges, along with other calligraphers, and is teaching both at home and abroad.
The pencil has been his favorite tool, and at all times he carries his Moleskine notebooks with him.
